John Corneille's Systems in Quality Cameras in Burwood Victoria, Melbourne and at his home:
I have two LS3/5a systems. This first
one is in daily use in my speciality camera store- Quality Cameras in Burwood
Victoria- and has been since we opened over a year ago. The system suits the
decor of the store which specialises in vintage Leica and other collectable
cameras. The system is a great conversation starter as many camera enthusiasts
are also interested in vintage & hi-end Hi-Fi but never realised I was also
until they saw this system in use in our store.
The setup comprises Rogers LS3/5a's (11 ohm) (Bought specificaly for this use as they are the most recognisable version) powered by original Quad IIs and a 22 pre-amp. Source is a multi disk CD player connected to the Quad pre-amp via an attenuating lead. The CD player looks out of place and is therefor hidden inside a cabinet.
John's Home System:
Speakers- LS3/5a Harbeth.
Stands- custom built sand filled steel.
Amps- Luxman CL35 preamp, MB3045 mono power amps
Sources- Luxman PD300 TT/stax UA9cf arm/luxman MC1 cartridge & sony 333ES
SACD player
Subwoofers- custom built (to match the decor!) dipole subs using 2x15"
woofers in each box.
Powered by Luxman M383 power amp using behringer 96/24 crossover & ultracurve
equalizer to match the rolloff with the natural rolloff of the LS3/5a and to
correct sub 80Hz room nodes.
Cables- wire type
NB-1. The subs are only used with music that demands them. The LS3/5a's are not rolled off as I prefer to keep the signal as clean as possible. The sub amp/crossover/equalizer setup normally lives out of sight in the cupboards along with the equally ugly SACD player! Although the subs are shown in the middle of the speakers they are normally used against the walls to increase natural gain and reduce nodes.
2. Alternate amps are Mcintosh MX110 pre and MC75 power amps- but I have hardly used these since converting to the luxmans just over a year ago. The MB3045s run tungsol 6550s however I also have a set with the scarce and fragile original 8045Gs which I use only if I am in a critical listening mood.
3. As you can see the room is fairly live so the semi nearfield listening position suits best.
